Spades Academy: Partner Basics — Working Together

"A healthy Spades partnership means knowing your partner’s needs—not just your own."

Spades is played in pairs. Once the bids are placed, the only number that matters is your team total. Every card you play should help you and your partner reach that goal.

    1. Spot Your Partner’s Clues

Your partner’s plays tell a story. Watch for:

    • First card they lead → usually their safest suit.

    • Early discards → suits they’re weak in or trying to avoid.

    • Sudden high cards → could signal urgency to win the trick.

Pay attention. Read between the cards.

    2. Let Your Partner Keep the Trick (Most of the Time)

Jumping in with a higher card when your partner is already winning usually wastes a good card and can throw off your team count.

    Only overtake if:

    • You’re close to 10 bags and need to burn one.

    • You want to keep the lead and guide the next play.

Ask yourself: "Will this help our team bid—or just feed my ego?"

    3. Play to the Team Bid

Let the scoreboard shape your play.

    • You bid 3. Partner bids 4. That’s 7 tricks total.

    • If they lose one, you may need to step up.

    • If they’re dominating, pull back and avoid bags.

It's not just your bid—it's the team's goal.

    4. How to Cover a Nil Bid

If your partner bids Nil, your job is to protect them:

    • Lead high cards early so they can play low.

    • Target suits they seem nervous about to help them unload dangerous cards.

    • Delay leading spades until they’re safe.

If the Nil is about to fail, sacrifice your bag count to save the 100-point penalty.

    5. Stay Positive

Spades can be swingy. Mistakes happen. Don’t tilt.

    • Avoid blame mid-hand.

    • Regroup. Focus on what’s next.

A calm team beats a tense one—almost every time.

    Bottom Line

"Think in terms of our bid, our tricks, our score."

Master these habits and you’ll become the partner everyone hopes to play with.
